The South African team, Sun Downs, won the title of the first edition of the African League Championship, after defeating its guest, Wydad of Morocco (2-0), this evening, Sunday.
The first leg was in Morocco, and ended with Wydad’s victory (2-1), which gave coach Adel Ramzi’s squad some hope to achieve the dream of the first title for this tournament, before Sun Downs stifled it with a distinguished performance and snatched the cup.
The Wydad coach relied on the same formation with which he played all the matches of the competition, with the exception of Anas Sargat replacing the suspended team captain, Yahya Gibran, in the midfield.
As expected, Wydad withstood Sun Downs’ overwhelming pressure at the start, winning 3 corner kicks, but they did not pose a threat to goalkeeper Youssef Al-Motie.
As Wydad players retreated, Sun Downs resorted to passing long balls, and one of them in the 27th minute almost resulted in the first goal for the home team after a lapse by defender Gamal Harkas, but the player Modiba mishandled it.
For the entire 39 minutes, no sign of Sun Downs goalkeeper Williams appeared, as Wydad did not initiate the attack, contenting itself with absorbing its opponent’s pressure and trying to seize possession of the ball in the middle.
With many stops during the first half, Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala was forced to add a full 12 minutes of stoppage time, during which Wydad’s fortresses collapsed, as Sun Downs scored the first goal in the 48th minute, after a rebound from Al-Mutati, completed by Shalulile at the top of the net.< /p>
At the beginning of the second half, Wydad coach Adel Ramzi brought in Senegalese striker Sambo Junior in place of Sharqi El Bahri, just as he brought in Saif Al-Din Bouhra in place of the injured Al-Hatimi to activate the attacking line.
In a completely strange way, Sargat gave the player Shalulile a gift that could not be returned and left him alone, but goalkeeper Youssef Al-Mutia intervened brilliantly.
We waited until the 50th minute to follow Wydad’s first shot from Bosufian against Williams’ goal without any significant danger, which was quickly responded to by the player Modiba in the 52nd minute after a lapse by the player Abu Al-Fath, and Modiba was alone with Al-Mutti’ and dunked the ball over him, giving Sundowns a second goal for his team.
A symbolic reaction came by inserting Al-Hanash and Al-Liby into the midfield to give some balance to this area, which Sun Downs completely controlled, without the performance improving until the last minutes, when Ammoud headed over the goal in the 82nd minute.
Despite the addition of a full 9 minutes by referee Ndala, Wydad lost focus and Sun Downs remained calm and in control in the match, which they ended with a well-deserved victory and a historic coronation in the first edition of the African League.
