Liverpool was forced to play the match from the 26th minute with only 10 players after the red card was shown to English midfielder Curtis Jones.
The referee awarded a direct red card to Jones after resorting to VAR, as a result of his violent intervention on the foot of Tottenham player Yves Bissouma.
Tottenham took advantage of the numerical disadvantage, and scored the first goal through its South Korean star, Heung-Min Son, in the 36th minute.
Despite the numerical deficiency, Liverpool were able to score the equalizer before the end of the first half through Dutchman Cody Jacobo.
Tottenham tried to regain the lead again, and even had a golden opportunity, when Portuguese Diogo Jota received a red card as a result of receiving two warnings, in the 69th minute.
Liverpool remained steadfast, and was close to coming away with a valuable point, but its Cameroonian defender Joel Matip scored an own goal against his team for Tottenham in the 96th minute.
It is noteworthy that the match is the first this season in which the Egyptian Mohamed Salah participates and does not score or assist in it.
