The Japanese national team was crowned champion of the U-23 Asian Youth Cup, which was held in Qatar, after defeating Uzbekistan (1-0) today, Friday.
The goalless draw dominated the outcome of the match until the first minute of stoppage time of the second half, when substitute Fuki Yamada snatched the valuable winning goal for Japan.
The third place match was held yesterday, Thursday, where the Iraqi national team defeated Indonesia (2-1) after overtime at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.
This is the second title for the Japanese national team in the history of the tournament, after it won the title in the 2016 edition, which was also held in Qatar.
Thus, the teams of Japan, Uzbekistan, and Iraq have qualified for the Paris Olympics next summer as representatives of the Asian continent, while the fourth-placed Indonesian team will play with the Guinea team, fourth on the African continent.
