The European Football Association (UEFA) revealed the lists of candidates for the Best in the Old Continent awards for the 2022-2023 season.
The Best in Europe Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on August 31, according to what UEFA announced on Thursday evening.
Argentine legend Lionel Messi, the American star of Inter Miami, registered a presence on the list of candidates, despite his departure from Europe for North America last June.
In the following lines, we review the two lists of candidates for the Best in Europe Awards for the 2022-2023 season, at the level of players and coaches.
Players nominated for the Best in Europe Awards 2023
Messi appeared on the list, alongside the English duo Manchester City; Belgian veteran Kevin De Bruyne, and his young Norwegian colleague Erling Haaland.
Leo Messi won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and presented outstanding individual levels with Paris Saint-Germain that won the French League last season.
On the other hand, De Bruyne and Haaland played the most prominent role in a historic season for Man City, which witnessed the team winning the Champions League title for the first time in its history, in addition to the Continental Super Cup, the English Premier League, and the FA Cup.
Nominated coaches for the Best in Europe Awards 2023
UEFA also announced the list of coaches nominated for the Best in Europe Awards 2023, led by Spaniard Pep Guardiola, coach of Man City.
Guardiola led his team to dominate local and continental titles during the year 2023, most notably the European Champions League for the first time in the history of the “Celestial Club”.
Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi also appeared on the list, who led his team to the Champions League final for the first time since 2010, before losing 0-1 to Man City.
Luciano Spalletti was also among the list of candidates for the award, after he led Napoli to win the Italian League title last season, for the first time in the 21st century.
