Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned on Monday that the Middle East is on the verge of a major regional war, pointing out that his country is working with all parties to prevent its outbreak.
In a speech during the Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council strategic dialogue session, Lavrov said that “the inability of the international community to stop the fighting in the Gaza Strip and the mass death of its population led to a sharp deterioration in the military-political situation throughout the region, from the borders of Lebanon and Israel.” To the Red Sea,” according to TASS.
He also added, "At the same time, the confrontation between Israel and Lebanon has reached a new dangerous level. The Middle East has once again come to the brink of a major regional war. Our shared responsibility is to prevent this from happening."
He also concluded by stressing: “We are working with all parties to return the situation to normal.”
Netanyahu threatens
It is noteworthy that Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, announced in a statement, on Sunday, that he had issued instructions to the army to change the situation in northern Israel on the border with Lebanon.
He added that Hezbollah is the strong arm of Iran, stressing the impossibility of the situation continuing as it is in the north.
He also reiterated his government's commitment to returning all residents of the north to their homes.
Iranian Axis of Evil
In addition, he considered that Israel is in a battle against the Iranian axis of evil and is obligated to prevent Tehran from possessing a nuclear weapon, as he described it.
He believed that “if Tel Aviv had not taken action over the past years, Tehran would have possessed nuclear weapons by now.”
These statements came after the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, Herzi Halevy, announced on Saturday that his forces were preparing to take offensive steps inside Lebanon.
It also came after the Iranian-backed Hezbollah launched about 50 rockets and shells towards the Upper Galilee on Sunday.
Almost daily confrontations
It is noteworthy that since October 7, 2023, the Lebanese-Israeli border has witnessed almost daily confrontations, in what the Iranian-backed Hezbollah called a “support front” for Hamas in Gaza.
While these confrontations led to the deaths of at least 610 people in Lebanon, including 394 Hezbollah members and 135 civilians, according to Agence France-Presse.
It also prompted hundreds of thousands of Lebanese to leave their homes and flee the south to escape the bombing.
As for Israel, the authorities counted the killing of at least 24 soldiers and 26 civilians, including 12 in the occupied Syrian Golan.
