The meeting of Arab foreign ministers, on Tuesday, in Cairo witnessed Arab countries agreeing to formally intervene to support the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel in the International Criminal Court.
The ministers stressed the necessity of operating the Rafah crossing for Gaza relief and demanded Israel’s withdrawal from the entire Gaza Strip, including the Philadelphia border axis.
The final statement of the meeting of the Council of the League of Arab States at the level of Arab foreign ministers stated that “the member states of the League of Arab States, parties to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948, agreed to formally intervene to support the call filed by South Africa against Israel before a court.” International Justice".
At the end of last December, South Africa resorted to the International Court of Justice and filed a complaint accusing Israel of violating the United Nations Convention on the Prevention of Genocide concluded in 1948 in its attack on Gaza, something the Jewish state vehemently denies.
The ministers also stressed during their meeting “the necessity of operating the Rafah crossing, and removing all obstacles” to the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
The ministers stressed the necessity of “Israel’s complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, including the Philadelphia axis and the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing,” stressing that the Palestinian-Egyptian border “may not be touched.”
The war began on October 7, following an unprecedented attack launched by Hamas on southern Israel, causing the deaths of 1,205 people on the Israeli side, most of them civilians, according to an Agence France-Presse census based on official Israeli data. This number includes hostages who died while being held in the Gaza Strip.
251 people were kidnapped during the attack, 97 of whom are still detained, including 33 who the army says have died.
Israel vowed to "eliminate" the movement. Israeli raids, bombings and ground operations in the Gaza Strip in response to the attack resulted in the deaths of at least 41,000 people, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health, which does not detail the number of militants and the number of civilians.
The Arab League statement on Tuesday urged member states “to provide the necessary financial support to the State of Palestine and to activate a transparent, agreed-upon Arab financial safety network to confront the punitive measures practiced by Israel.”
The Arab ministers warned in the statement of the repercussions of “launching a widespread aggression against Lebanon, which could lead to the outbreak of a comprehensive regional war and threaten the security and stability of the countries of the region.”
The Arab League Council also called on the International Criminal Court “to issue arrest warrants against the leaders of the Israeli occupation.”
