Egypt.. The first official comment on sending the “weapons ship” to Somalia

On Monday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a comment confirming the sending of a warship carrying a shipment of weapons to Somalia.
After Cairo sent planes carrying weapons to Somalia last August, military officials revealed, on Monday, that an Egyptian warship had delivered another large shipment of weapons to the country located in the Horn of Africa.
The arms shipment, according to what Reuters reported, included anti-aircraft guns and artillery weapons, in a move likely to exacerbate tension between the two countries on the one hand, and Ethiopia on the other.
According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, on Monday, the new shipment comes within the framework of Egypt’s support for Somalia’s efforts to achieve security and stability, combat terrorism, and preserve its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
The official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a shipment of Egyptian military aid to the Somali army had arrived in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, with the aim of supporting and building its capabilities.
He added that this aid comes within the framework of implementing Egypt's obligations under the recently signed military cooperation protocol with Somalia, and an emphasis on the continuation of Egypt's pivotal role in supporting Somali efforts towards possessing national capabilities and capabilities to achieve the aspirations of the brotherly Somali people for security, stability and development.
Military officials said, on Monday, that an Egyptian warship delivered a second large shipment of weapons to Somalia, including anti-aircraft guns and artillery weapons, in a move likely to exacerbate tensions between the two countries on the one hand and Ethiopia on the other.
Last August, Egypt delivered military aid to Somalia, the first in more than four decades.
Egypt has close relations with Mogadishu that include multiple aspects of political, economic, cultural and military cooperation.
Relations between Egypt and Somalia strengthened this year against the backdrop of their common position of distrust of Ethiopia, and the two countries signed a joint security agreement in August.
On the other hand, Egypt disagrees with Ethiopia, the neighboring country of Somalia, regarding the huge Renaissance Dam project that Addis Ababa is building on the Blue Nile, which has raised tensions between the two countries, as Egypt fears its impact on its share of water.
Ethiopia angered Mogadishu by signing a preliminary agreement with the breakaway region of Somaliland to rent a coastal port in exchange for possible recognition of its independence from Somalia.
Egypt denounced that agreement with Somaliland.
