US President Joe Biden said on Saturday that the killing of Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli air strike is “a standard of justice for many of his victims, including thousands of American, Israeli, and Lebanese civilians.”
In a White House statement, Biden said: “America fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and any other terrorist groups supported by Iran.”
He added: “I directed the Minister of Defense to strengthen the position of American forces in the Middle East to deter any aggression and reduce the risks of turning into a comprehensive war in the region.”
He continued, "Our goal is to reduce the escalation in the current conflicts, whether in Gaza or Lebanon, through diplomatic means."
The Pentagon said on Friday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke twice on Friday with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant regarding the events in Lebanon, where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed along with senior leaders in an Israeli raid on the southern suburb of Beirut.
p>Austin said that Washington is ready to protect American forces and facilities in the region and is committed to defending Israel.
The US Secretary of Defense expressed Washington's determination to prevent Iran and its agents from exploiting the situation or expanding the conflict, after the killing of Nasrallah.

A Pentagon official told Al Hurra that the United States has sufficient capabilities to defend its forces in the Middle East.
The official added, "Washington also has sufficient capabilities to help Israel defend itself and also to carry out evacuation operations from Lebanon if that is decided."
The official indicated that “the review conducted by Pentagon leaders may result in an increase in the number of forces or their repositioning and the strengthening of American military capabilities in the region.”
