Israel continues to launch its air strikes and target senior leaders in Hezbollah, as three security sources revealed that Wafiq Safa, a senior leader in the party, survived an Israeli assassination attempt in Beirut on Thursday, according to Reuters.
While 22 people were killed and 117 others were injured Thursday as a result of the two Israeli raids in Beirut, according to what the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported, in the bloodiest bombing targeting the heart of the capital since the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah on September 23.
The Ministry of Health said in a statement, “The Israeli enemy’s attacks on the capital, Beirut, this evening led, in a new toll, to the death of twenty-two people and the wounding of one hundred and seventeen others.”
Saffa is considered one of the mysterious figures who sparked controversy because of his important role in the party at the security and political levels.
He is also one of the pivotal figures in managing the party’s political, foreign and security relations, and he played a major role in many negotiations, both at the internal Lebanese and regional levels, including the prisoner exchange between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006.< /p>
According to the Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath correspondent, the strike targeted a residential building in the Al-Nuwairi area between Burj Abi Haidar and Al-Basta Al-Fawqa in the Lebanese capital.
She also indicated that there was another strike that also affected the “Fath Allah” area, noting that the area is densely populated.
This is the first time that the Al-Nuwairi area has been targeted.
According to Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath sources, it appears that the raid was carried out from a warship.
Israel launches almost daily raids targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut, the main stronghold of Hezbollah, but strikes rarely target the heart of the capital.
Israel directed a series of strikes against the party’s strongholds and its military and leadership structure, most notably the assassination of its Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, in a massive air strike in the southern suburbs on September 27.
These raids also resulted in the deaths of more than 1,190 people, and forced more than a million to flee, according to official figures.
