Identical sources told Reuters and Agence France-Presse that Qatar suspended the work of the Hamas office in Doha after “its presence was no longer justified,” and it also decided to withdraw from mediation efforts.
Agence France-Presse explained that Qatar believes that the presence of an office for the Palestinian Hamas movement in Doha is no longer justified.
Since the beginning of the Israeli war in Gaza, Qatar has been involved in mediation efforts with Egypt and the United States of America to reach a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement.
The mediators' efforts failed time after time, while Hamas and Israel exchanged accusations about responsibility for the failure to reach an agreement.
Agence France-Presse quoted an unnamed diplomatic source: Qatar is withdrawing from mediation efforts in the Gaza Strip.
For its part, Reuters said that an unnamed informed official also confirmed that Qatar informed Israel, Hamas, and the American administration of its decision (to withdraw from mediation efforts).
The agency also quoted its source as saying, “Qatar has concluded that Hamas’ political office in Doha no longer serves its purpose.”
But a Hamas source told Agence France-Presse that the movement had not received any request to leave the country from Qatar.
Earlier today, the American CNN network, citing American and Qatari sources, said that “Doha agreed in recent weeks to expel the Hamas movement from its territory at the request of Washington.”
The senior Palestinian movement resides in the Qatari capital, Doha, where rounds of negotiations took place over the past year to reach a truce agreement.
According to the sources, with the faltering efforts to stop the war between Israel and Hamas, which was the top priority of outgoing US President Joe Biden, American officials informed their Qatari counterparts about two weeks ago of the need to stop giving Hamas refuge in their capital.
She indicated that Qatar agreed - for its part - and notified Hamas about a week ago.
There has been no official comment yet - Qatari or American - on what the sources reported.
