On Wednesday, US authorities charged a man who worked for the US government for leaking classified information related to Israel’s plans to attack Iran, according to judicial documents.
The man, Asif William Rahman, was arrested by the FBI this week in Cambodia, according to the Associated Press.
Reuters reported that the indictment includes two charges related to intentionally transmitting confidential information, without providing details about the nature of the leak.
But at the same time, the list says that the leak occurred on or about October 17, the same time that a pro-Iranian Telegram account called “Middle East Spectator” published what appeared to be a pair of documents produced by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, which participated Information about Israel's preparations to launch an attack on Iran.
The intelligence in the documents was based on satellite images from October 15 to 16.
In a previous statement, the Middle East Spectator account said that it received the documents from an anonymous source, and that it has no connection to the original source that leaked the documents and cannot verify their authenticity.
In October, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that it was investigating the identity of the document leaker.
According to the indictment dated November 7, investigators believe the leak occurred in Cambodia.
Rahman is expected to appear in federal court on the island of Guam for the first time on November 14 before being transferred to stand trial in the Eastern District of Virginia.
Israeli warplanes struck military sites in Iran on October 26 in response to a major Iranian missile attack targeting Israel at the beginning of the same month.
Iran announced that it fired 200 missiles at Israel on October 1 in response to the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, along with a leader in the Revolutionary Guards in an Israeli raid south of Beirut, and the director of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, in an operation in Tehran attributed to Israel.
