After the Israeli army, today, Sunday, summoned more ultra-Orthodox Jews to join and reinforce the army forces during the fighting on the southern and northern borders, the “Haredim” escalated, as was expected.
Demonstrations turned into clashes
They launched demonstrations throughout the capital, Tel Aviv, in rejection of the decision.
The demonstrations of extremists against conscription also turned into clashes and fistfights, causing casualties after they spread out and blocked the roads in the center of the capital.
While Israeli police intervened to disperse them and break up their sit-in.
These developments came a few hours after the Israeli army issued new notices to the Haredim, including a call for conscription.
The army called on more religious Jews, on Sunday, to join and reinforce its forces during the fighting on the southern and northern borders.
In addition, observers warned against this step, and expected it to further inflame tensions between religious and secular Israelis.
The Supreme Court ruled in June that the Ministry of Defense could no longer grant blanket exemptions to Jewish religious institute students from compulsory military service, an arrangement that had been in place since around the time of the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, when the number of ultra-Orthodox Jews was low. , or the Haredim, insignificantly.
At a time when Israel is fighting two wars in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, the Israeli Ministry of Defense said on Friday that 7,000 members of the sect will receive notifications gradually, starting today, Sunday.
A statement from the Ministry of Defense said that it would work with leaders of this community to ensure that Haredi soldiers are able to maintain their religious lifestyles while serving.
A thousand recruitment orders
It is noteworthy that the approval of Defense Minister Katz came after the Israeli army announced, on Thursday, that it plans to issue a thousand new recruitment orders for qualified Haredi men, on Sunday, as part of 7 thousand orders that it will issue within a period ranging from 6 to 8 weeks.
>According to the Ministry of Defense, the goal of recruitment is “to enable the integration of the Haredim into the Israeli army to reduce the burden on soldiers and reservists,” according to its statement.
It is noteworthy that since 2017, successive governments have failed to reach a consensus law regarding Haredi recruitment, after the Supreme Court annulled a law enacted in 2015 that exempted them from military service, considering that the exemption violates the “principle of equality.”
Since then, the Knesset has continued to extend their exemption from military service, and at the end of last March, an order issued by the Netanyahu government to postpone the implementation of compulsory conscription for the “haredim” expired.
As for the ultra-Orthodox Jews or “Haredi Jews”, they are a very strict religious movement, and the word “Haredi” means pious.
The "Haredi" Jews disavow Zionism, and the majority of them live in historical Palestine and the United States. Some of them also live in European countries and move between them, and in their beliefs they belong to the Torah and ancient Jewish intellectual origins
