The UN Security Council will vote on Monday on a draft resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan, in a new attempt to put pressure on the country’s two rival generals.
The draft resolution, prepared by the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone, calls on the parties “to immediately cease hostilities and engage in good faith in dialogue to enable steps towards de-escalation, with the aim of agreeing to an urgent ceasefire throughout the country.”
A war has been raging since April 2023 between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, his former deputy.
