On Tuesday, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on six Hamas officials, including representatives of the movement abroad.
The US Treasury decision stated that its Office in charge of Foreign Assets Control imposed sanctions on Hamas leaders, including a prominent member of its military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, and others involved in supporting fundraising operations and smuggling weapons into Gaza.
The US Department of the Treasury's Acting Director of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Affairs, Bradley T. Smith, said the Treasury “continues its commitment to thwarting Hamas’ efforts to provide additional sources of revenue and hold accountable those who facilitate the activities of this terrorist group.”
He explained, “Hamas continues to rely on key officials who appear to hold legitimate and public positions within the group, but they facilitate its terrorist activities, represent its interests abroad, and coordinate the transfer of funds into Gaza.”
The United States had previously announced, in early October, the imposition of new sanctions on entities and individuals supporting the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip. It said that many of them worked under the cover of fake charitable organizations, which enabled the movement to collect $10 million a month since the beginning of this year. .
The announcement of these sanctions coincided with the first anniversary of the bloody Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, where the organization’s militants killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and kidnapped about 250 people.
