The Iranian authorities released Narges Mohammadi, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who has been imprisoned in her country since November 2021 for her struggle against the compulsory hijab and against the death penalty, on Wednesday for a period of three weeks for medical reasons, according to what her lawyer announced on the X platform.
Lawyer Mostafa Nili said, “Based on the opinion of the forensic doctor, the Public Prosecution in Tehran suspended the implementation of the sentence issued against Narges Mohammadi for a period of three weeks, and she was released.”
The activist Mohammadi (52 years old), known for her struggle against the death penalty and her rejection of the compulsory hijab, has been detained in Evin Prison in Tehran since November 2021. She has been imprisoned several times over the past decade.
Nili explained that “the reason for her release was her physical condition after undergoing a tumor removal and bone grafting operation 21 days ago,” adding, “The tumor that was removed was benign, but (Mohammadi) needs a medical review every three months.”
