Biden: The Syrians are facing a historic opportunity... and Assad will be held accountable

US President Joe Biden considered that the Syrian president who left the country, Bashar al-Assad, “faced justice,” noting that the Syrians now have an opportunity to advance their country, after the fall of his regime.
The US President said in response to a question from reporters after receiving a briefing from the National Security Team about the fall of the Syrian regime: “Assad must be held accountable.”
He added, "Russia failed to protect its main agent in the region, as well as Iran and Hezbollah," noting that after receiving support from Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah for years, "this support vanished. It vanished within days."
The US President announced that he would send senior officials to the region and said: “We will support Syria’s neighboring countries, Iraq, Jordan, and Israel, and we will work with the parties concerned to help them seize the opportunity to manage risks.”
He added: “We will help impose stability in eastern Syria, protect our military personnel from threats, and we will work to combat ISIS and secure its militants’ detention centers.”
Biden pledged that the United States would not allow the extremist organization to “exploit the vacuum and restore its capabilities,” noting that American aircraft had already launched strikes in Syria targeting the organization.
The American President expressed the United States’ support for “a political process away from the Assad regime to reach a stable, sovereign Syria, and this process will be approved by the Syrian people.”
Regarding the opposition groups that toppled the Assad regime, the US President said, “We will remain vigilant,” noting that “some rebel groups have a record of terrorism.” He added: "We are following the statements of the new Syrian leaders, and they seem good so far, and we are also monitoring their actions."
He said that there is "an opportunity for a better future for Syria, and opposition groups must play a role in Syria and demonstrate the rule of law and the protection of minorities."
Biden said: “These are historic days and will determine the future of the country. The fall of Assad is a historic opportunity for Syrians to build a better future despite the ambiguity and dangers resulting from the current situation.”
He added: “We know that there are Americans in Syria, including Austin Tice, who we believe is still alive.”
The US embassy in Syria called on American citizens to "leave Syria if possible." Because of the “volatile and unpredictable” security situation.
She added in a statement published on her “X” account that “American citizens who are unable to leave must prepare contingency plans for emergency situations and prepare to shelter in place for long periods.”
Syrian opposition militants announced the overthrow of Assad after they took control of Damascus on Sunday, ending his family's rule of the country after a civil war that lasted more than 13 years.
After hours of speculation, the Kremlin officially announced, on Sunday, that Assad would be crowned in the Russian capital.
