US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Saturday that Washington and Arab countries believe that the status quo in the Gaza Strip, which is run by the Hamas movement, cannot continue. In this regard, he reiterated that the United States believes that the ceasefire will only lead to “keeping Hamas in its place.”
He added, in a press conference in Amman with his Egyptian counterpart, Shameh Shukri, and his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Al-Safadi, that he discussed with his Arab counterparts about charting a better path forward towards the two-state solution.
Blinken also stated, according to Reuters, that Washington is concerned about the violence of extremist settlers in the West Bank.
He referred to the efforts made to neutralize Palestinian civilians from the conflict and accelerate the delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip, adding: “The United States believes that all these efforts will be easier through these humanitarian truces.”
For his part, Al-Safadi called for an end to the war in Gaza, describing it as a “war crime” committed by Israel.
As for Shukri, he called for “an immediate and unconditional ceasefire,” according to Agence France-Presse.
During his visit to Israel on Friday, Blinken's request for humanitarian truces was rejected by the Israeli side, but he promised to continue efforts in this regard.
