Washington imposes sanctions on Asma al-Assad's father and high-ranking Syrian officers

Washington accused high-ranking officials during the Assad regime of committing “war crimes,” and also imposed sanctions on Fawaz al-Akhras, Bashar al-Assad’s father-in-law.
The US Department of Justice announced that the charges include former Syrian intelligence officials Jamil Hassan (72 years old) and Abdul Salam Mahmoud (65 years old) of involvement in “a conspiracy to practice cruel and inhumane treatment of detainees, including American citizens, during the Syrian civil war in detention centers at the airport.” Mezze Military Prison, near Damascus. Arrest orders were issued to arrest the accused and they are still at large.
In a statement issued by the US Department of the Treasury, Fawaz Al-Akhras was included in the sanctions list due to “providing support and facilities to Bashar Al-Assad in relation to financial matters and evading sanctions.”
Fawaz Al-Akhras, Bashar Al-Assad’s father-in-law, was born in the city of Homs in September. 1946. He holds both Syrian and British citizenship, according to the Treasury Department's list of individuals subject to sanctions.
He is a doctor specializing in cardiology and practiced medicine in London, where his daughter, Asma, Bashar al-Assad’s wife, was born.
Al-Akhras, whose registered address is in a modest house in west London, was placed on a US sanctions list in 2020, along with his daughter Asmaa, his wife Sahar, and a number of other family members.
