The Israeli army announced that about “five projectiles” were fired from the northern Gaza Strip towards Israel, today, Sunday.
The army said in a brief statement, “It intercepted two shells, and it is likely that the rest fell in open areas.”
The Magen David Adom Ambulance Service also said that its crews were heading to the areas where there were reports of rocket attacks.
Alarm sirens were sounded at approximately 16:30 (14:30 GMT) in the vicinity of the city of Sderot, adjacent to the destroyed and besieged Palestinian Strip.
Israel had previously announced, on Saturday, that it had been targeted by two "projectiles" fired from Gaza and that they were intercepted before they fell.
New evacuation orders
In addition, residents said that the Israeli forces, which have been carrying out military operations for weeks in northern Gaza, ordered the remaining residents of the town of Beit Hanoun to evacuate on Sunday, due to what they say is the firing of rockets by Palestinian militants from the area.
Residents added that the evacuation orders caused a new wave of displacement, but it is not yet clear how many people were affected by these orders.
Israel says that its military operations, which have been ongoing for nearly three months in northern Gaza, aim to prevent Hamas militants from reorganizing their ranks. The army says that evacuation orders for civilians are aimed at keeping them out of harm's way.
No place is safe in Gaza
On the other hand, Palestinian officials and others from the United Nations say that there is no safe place in the Gaza Strip, and that evacuations lead to deteriorating humanitarian conditions for residents.
Much of the area surrounding the towns of Beit Hanoun, Jabalia and Beit Lahia in the north was depopulated and destroyed, raising speculation that Israel intends to establish a closed buffer zone after the fighting in Gaza ends.
Health officials in Gaza said that Israeli military operations in the Strip have so far caused the death of more than 45,300 Palestinians, in addition to the displacement of most of the population of 2.3 million people, and the destruction of large areas of the Strip.
The war broke out after a surprise attack launched by Hamas fighters on towns in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which Israeli statistics indicate led to the killing of 1,200 people and the taking of 251 hostages to Gaza.
