US President-elect Donald Trump referred, on Wednesday, to his role in reaching a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Trump referred to this “epic” agreement that could only have happened “as a result of our historic victory in November,” referring to his victory in the presidential elections and his expected return to the White House on January 20.
The agreement was reached after about 15 months of battles, and after continuous negotiations for days in the Qatari capital, Doha, today.
In urgent comments on his “Truth Social” platform, Trump confirmed that an agreement had been reached under which Israel would release Palestinians, while Hamas would release Israeli hostages it was holding in the Gaza Strip.
The president-elect added: “We have an agreement regarding the hostages in the Middle East and they will be released soon.”
He also indicated that he would work to build on the Abraham Peace Accords and expand their scope.
He noted that he is "excited that the American and Israeli hostages will return to their homeland to be reunited with their families and loved ones."
He continued that his national security team, through the efforts of Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, will continue to work closely with Israel and allies to ensure that Gaza never again becomes a safe haven for terrorists.
In the midst of the announcement of reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the “end” of the war between Israel and Hamas that has been ongoing for 15 months, it is expected that talk will be renewed about the path of normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which has been under speculation and negotiations for several years.
Trump said: “This is just the beginning of great things that will happen for America, and for the entire world.”
He continued: "We have accomplished a lot without being in the White House. Just imagine all the wonderful things that will happen when I return to the White House, and my administration is fully confirmed, so they can secure more victories for the United States."
Trump had confirmed that he looked forward to the release of the Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip before his scheduled inauguration this month.
He said a week ago in response to a question about the Gaza negotiations, “If the hostages are not released by the time of my inauguration, the gates of hell will open wide.”
