The Kremlin said, on Thursday, that it sees “nothing new” in the recent statements of US President Donald Trump regarding the war in Ukraine and his threats to impose new sanctions on Russia, stressing at the same time that it is open to dialogue.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to a journalist’s inquiry about Donald Trump’s threats on Wednesday to impose new sanctions on Russia if it does not reach a solution to the conflict with Ukraine quickly, “We do not see anything new (...) We are ready for dialogue, dialogue on foot.” Equality and mutual respect.”
On Wednesday, Trump threatened his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to impose customs duties and sanctions on Russia if it did not work to reach an agreement that would put an end to the brutal war in Ukraine “immediately.”
Trump wrote in a tweet on his Truth Social platform, “If we don’t make a deal soon, I have no other choice but to impose heavy taxes, customs duties, and sanctions on everything Russia sells to the United States and other countries.”
The US President said that he is not looking to harm Russia: “I love the Russian people, and I have always had a very good relationship with President Putin.”
On Wednesday, the Interfax news agency quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying that Moscow sees a small opportunity to conclude agreements with the new US administration headed by Trump.
