The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) estimated the number of people sleeping outdoors in Morocco as a result of the devastating earthquake at about 300,000 people.
The organization's director in France, Adeline Hazan, said that about 300,000 people affected by the earthquake have no homes today and are sleeping in the streets.
She added in statements to France Info on Tuesday: “There are 100,000 children without shelter, schools or hospitals. It is a struggle against time and against death as well.” The official called for launching a broad solidarity campaign to help those affected by the earthquake.
Hazan said: “UNICEF teams are there to support and console the children. There are many orphaned children and a large number of displaced children who do not know the whereabouts of their parents,” adding that this would leave terrible psychological problems.
Hazan warned that children may face the risk of dehydration, which is why UNICEF is working to provide them with food and enable them to continue their studies.
The International Federation of Red Crescent and Red Cross organizations called, on Tuesday, for the mobilization of more than 100 million euros to support rescue efforts in Morocco and meet urgent needs on the ground.
The Moroccan Ministry of Interior announced, on Monday, that the death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck various areas of the country last Friday had risen to 2,862 dead and 2,562 injured.
