Israeli President Isaac Herzog said on Tuesday that Israel is ready to enter into another foreign-brokered truce in Gaza in order to recover prisoners held by Hamas and enable more aid to reach the besieged Palestinian Strip.
According to his office, Herzog, whose position is largely ceremonial, told a crowd of ambassadors, “Israel is ready for another humanitarian truce and more humanitarian aid in order to enable the release of prisoners.”
He added, "The responsibility lies entirely with (Hamas leader Yahya) Sinwar and (other) Hamas leaders."
This comes as a senior Hamas leader said in a statement, today, that the movement refuses to conduct negotiations on the exchange of detainees during the Israeli war, but is open to any initiative to end it.
Basem Naim, a leader in Hamas, said, “There will be no negotiations about the prisoners before the aggression stops, and we are open to any initiative that reduces the burden on our people.”
A source told Reuters that the meeting between the Prime Minister of Qatar and the directors of the Israeli intelligence service (Mossad) and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Warsaw yesterday, Monday, to discuss the release of prisoners held by the Hamas movement was positive, but not Expectations of an imminent solution.
Officials met in the Polish capital to discuss a possible new agreement to secure the release of Israeli prisoners held by Hamas in Gaza in exchange for the possible release of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons and a truce on humanitarian grounds.
The source familiar with the diplomatic efforts told Reuters, “The talks were positive and the negotiators explored and discussed various proposals in an attempt to make progress in the negotiations... but an agreement is not expected to be reached imminently.”
