The Iranian Tasnim news agency reported on Sunday that Iran had detained a foreign ship carrying “two million liters of smuggled fuel” near the coastal city of Bushehr in the south of the country.
According to Reuters, “Tehran is combating the phenomenon of fuel smuggling by land to neighboring countries and by sea to the Gulf states.”
Fuel prices in Iran are among the cheapest in the world due to the large subsidies and the decline in the value of the local currency.
At a time when many countries in the West are struggling to control high fuel prices, the Iranian government is suffering from a completely different problem: gasoline has become very cheap, according to a report published by the Financial Times of London.
