Egypt raised the minimum wage by 50% to 6,000 pounds (about 195 dollars), as part of a social package worth 180 billion pounds, the Egyptian presidency announced in a press statement.
The statement stated, on Wednesday, that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi had directed the implementation of “the largest urgent social package for social protection,” so that the wages of workers in the state and economic bodies would be increased, with a minimum ranging from 1,000 to 1,200 pounds, depending on job grade.
The statement indicated that the package includes allocating 15 billion pounds, additional increases for doctors, nurses, teachers, and university faculty members, in addition to allocating 6 billion pounds to appoint 120,000 members of the medical profession, teachers, and workers in other administrative bodies.
The social package included a 15% increase in pensions for 13 million Egyptians, at a total cost of 74 billion pounds, and a 15% increase in “Solidarity and Dignity” pensions at a cost of 5.5 billion pounds, so that the increase within a year becomes 55% of the value of the pension, provided that Allocating 41 billion pounds to “Solidarity and Karama” pensions in the fiscal year 2024/2025, according to the statement.
The social package includes “raising the tax exemption limit for all state employees in the government and the public and private sectors by 33%, from 45 thousand pounds to 60 thousand pounds, at a total annual cost of 5 billion pounds.”
Last September, the Egyptian President directed the government to increase the “exceptional cost of living allowance” for public sector employees to 600 pounds, instead of 300 pounds, and to increase the minimum income for the sixth job grade, to 4,000 pounds, instead of 3,500 pounds. .
