Uber issued a statement regarding the details of the accident of Habiba Al-Shamaa, known as the Sunrise Girl, and clarified several important points.
Uber said in its statement: We are deeply saddened by the painful accident, and we pray for Habiba’s speedy recovery, and all support for her and her family in this difficult ordeal, and we affirm our complete and utmost respect for the feelings of the family and all those who were hurt by this accident that hurt us all.
She continued: We also affirm our respect for the progress of the investigations conducted by the official authorities in Egypt, and the steps that have been taken in accordance with Uber’s safety guidelines, which are represented in the following points:
We take any incident that threatens safety very seriously, and we have a specialized team that follows strict procedures in accordance with the company’s global policies.
The Incident Response Team (IRT) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to quickly respond to any issues or incidents reported around the world.
The competent team takes internal investigation procedures the moment the incident is reported.
Regarding this incident, the incident response team acted immediately upon receiving the report, and contacted a family member to provide them with support.
She continued: We cooperate with the competent Egyptian authorities in everything the investigations need, and we work with them to provide the necessary information to support their investigations. All Uber trips are insured through a contract with an insurance company for the passenger and the driver. The insurance company is currently communicating with the parties concerned and following the necessary procedures. .
According to Egyptian media, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi intervened in the case and contacted the girl’s family to check on her condition.
The victim's mother, Dina Ismail, said in statements to the Egyptian Channel 1 that she thanks the Egyptian President for his personal contact with the family and his announcement of providing all necessary assistance to treat their daughter, noting that Sisi informed them of the possibility of transferring her for treatment abroad if necessary.
The Egyptian Ministry of Interior had revealed the circumstances of the accident that occurred in the assembly area east of Cairo and shocked Egyptians.
She said in a statement that one of the eyewitnesses reported that “he saw the girl while he was walking on the Suez Road jumping out of the back door of a car, so he stopped to help her, and she informed him that she was riding in the car belonging to a smart transportation application, and when the car driver tried to confront her, she jumped out of the vehicle out of fear.” He harassed her, and she was taken to the hospital.”
The Ministry announced that the driver had been identified and arrested, and it was found that he resides in Giza Governorate. However, he denied kidnapping Habiba, explaining that he closed the car windows and sprayed perfume, but he was surprised by the girl’s strange behavior.
