Maryam Nawaz Sharif (50 years old), the daughter of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, became the first woman in the country to govern a province, after being elected Prime Minister in Punjab Province, which is a stronghold of her family’s influence.
Maryam Sharif described assuming this position as an “honor” for every woman in the country. Yesterday, Monday, she took the constitutional oath surrounded by her father and uncle and said that assuming the position was equivalent to “making history.”
Maryam said that she was happy to sit in the seat where her father was sitting, and she is considered the political heir to Nawaz Sharif: “My father trained me on how to manage the office.”
In her first speech before the provincial legislative council, Maryam thanked God, her father Nawaz Sharif, his uncle Shehbaz Sharif, and the lawmakers who voted for her to rule Punjab province.
It is noteworthy that her father, widely known as the “Lion of Punjab,” served as prime minister three times, and his last term ended in 2017.
Maryam assured regional legislators after her election to this position: “It is a victory for every woman, and a victory for every daughter and mother,” adding: “It is proof that being a woman and a daughter cannot limit your dreams.”
