The World Food Program warned of an imminent famine in northern Gaza, as no humanitarian organization has been able to provide aid since January 23 in light of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
WFP Deputy Executive Director Karl Skow told the UN Security Council that “unless there is any change, northern Gaza faces imminent famine.”
US aid to Gaza worth $53 million and a request to facilitate its delivery
Ramesh Rajasingham of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said a famine outbreak was "almost unavoidable."
Earlier, the United Nations confirmed that Israeli forces "systematically" prevent aid from reaching the residents of Gaza who need it, which complicates the task of delivering it to a war zone that is not subject to any law.
In recent weeks, the Israeli authorities have prevented all aid convoys planned to be sent to the north, and the last aid allowed to enter was on January 23, according to the World Health Organization.
What makes the situation more difficult is that even convoys that were previously cleared and inspected by the Israeli authorities were repeatedly blocked or came under fire.
The UN rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, also stated that Israel is deliberately starving the Palestinians, stressing that “it must be held accountable for war crimes and genocide.”
The UN Special Rapporteur said in an interview with the British newspaper "The Guardian" that "there is no reason to intentionally prevent the passage of humanitarian aid or to deliberately destroy small fishing vessels, greenhouses and orchards in Gaza other than to deny people access to food."
He stressed that “it is clear that deliberately depriving people of food is a war crime,”
He reiterated that “Israel has announced its intention to destroy the Palestinian people, in whole or in part, simply because they are Palestinian.”
