Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi announced on Monday evening that he is running for a new presidential term in the elections scheduled for next December.
Sisi previously won two elections held in 2014 and 2018, with 96 percent and then 97 percent of the votes.
In addition, several figures announced their intention to run in the elections scheduled for next December, most notably Ahmed Al-Tantawi and Abdel-Sanad Yamama from the Wafd Party, Hazem Omar from the Republican People’s Party, and Farid Zahran from the Egyptian Democratic Party.
According to the Egyptian Constitution, in order to run for the presidential elections, a candidate must obtain the recommendation of at least 20 members within the House of Representatives or collect popular representation from 25,000 citizens who have the right to vote in at least 15 governorates, with the minimum in each governorate being 1,000 supporters.
According to the timetable for the 2024 presidential marathon... which was announced by the National Elections Authority in Egypt... it has set the date for receiving applications from candidates for this constitutional election between the 5th and 14th of October.
It also specified that the presidential elections will be held from the tenth to the twelfth of next December.
The Supreme Elections Commission said that the election results are expected to be announced on December 18, and in the event of a second round being resorted to, the final results will be announced no later than January 16, 2024.
