If the position of president becomes vacant in Iran, the Constitution of the Islamic Republic says that the first vice president assumes “the duties of the President of the Republic.”

Under the constitution issued in 1979 after the Islamic Revolution, which was amended in 1989, the first vice president of Iran assumes power “within 50 days at most,” as preparations are made for the election of a new president.
The Constitution also stipulates that “in the event of the death of the First Vice President of the Republic or other matters preventing him from carrying out his duties, and also in the event that the President of the Republic does not have a First Vice President, the leadership shall appoint another person in his place,” noting that the Constitution refers to the Supreme Leader when Mentions of leadership.
