Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus will arrive in Bangladesh on Thursday, where he will assume the presidency of the interim government that will be sworn in immediately, with the task of leading a “democratic process” towards quick elections.
This government, which will be led by the 84-year-old economist, was formed following violence that resulted in the deaths of more than 400 people and the flight of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Army Commander General Waqr al-Zaman said that Yunus is scheduled to take the constitutional oath on Thursday “around eight o’clock” in the evening (14:00 GMT) during a ceremony “in the presence of about a hundred people initially.”
The military commander said in a televised address to the nation that he was “confident” that Muhammad Yunus would be “able to lead a good democratic process whose fruits we will reap.”
