Yemen is witnessing a noticeable increase in suicide cases and humanitarian tragedies, as economic and living conditions continue to deteriorate in areas under the control of the Houthi militia.
In Ibb Governorate, an unidentified citizen committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a truck in Al-Udayn District, which led to his immediate death. Activists circulated on social media a picture of the victim’s body, whose facial features were missing after the truck ran over his head. The motives for suicide are attributed to the deteriorating economic situation and the interruption of salaries for the eighth year in a row, which led to an unprecedented escalation in the number of suicide victims in the governorate.
In another incident in Sanaa, which is under the control of the Houthi militia, citizen Ali Al-Ghazi ended his life in the room of his house, after leaving a painful message to his wife via the “WhatsApp” application and informing her of his decision to commit suicide as a result of the difficult living conditions. Before he shot himself, he wrote on the walls of his room the phrase “Hunger is an infidel,” in a clear reference to the extent of the suffering he was facing.
In another context, citizens in the city of Ibb found the body of a newborn thrown in a garbage barrel in the Mashoura area, Thawab Al-Ulia subdistrict. This heinous crime aroused the discontent of the residents, who demanded that the security services, run by the Houthi militia, assume their responsibilities in following up on the case, finding out the parents of the newborn, and holding them accountable.
These incidents come as the Houthi militia continues to plunder the salaries of state employees in areas under its control for more than nine years, with the escalation of food and service prices, widespread poverty, and lack of sources of income, which exacerbates the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the country.
