In an event that sparked widespread controversy among local circles, a new cemetery was opened in the Al-Mamdara area in Aden Governorate, in the presence of a number of officials, which raised questions about society’s priorities in light of the multiple crises that the country is suffering from.
The official opening of the cemetery was sponsored by Sheikh Abdul Rahman Saleh Al-Muharami, Vice President of the Presidential Council, Dr. Muhammad Hussein Al-Wali, Director-General of the Endowments and Guidance Office in Aden, and Dr. Wissam Muawiyah, Director-General of Sheikh Othman Directorate. The Al-Hikma Al-Yamani Charitable Society - Aden Branch organized this event as part of the cemetery reclamation project, with support from the endowment of the heirs of Laila Salem Al-Mutawa, under the supervision of the Arab World Committee of the Society for the Revival of Islamic Heritage in Kuwait.
The project includes improving the services provided in the cemetery, as a curator’s room, a washing machine, and a chapel were created, in addition to raising the fence and a solar-powered well.
However, this opening sparked strong reactions on social media. Activist Suzi Alawi expressed her dissatisfaction in a post on Facebook, where she considered that celebrating the opening of a cemetery reflects a state of despair in society. She wrote: “When the opening of a cemetery becomes an achievement, I know that you are living the last moments of the life of a community,” and pointed out that promoting cemeteries kills people. The spirit of life and hope in people.
Journalist Fathi Ben Lazraq criticized the celebration of death, pointing out that society needs vital projects and not more cemeteries. He wrote: “The people want to live, not to be surrounded by death from all sides.”
While activist Majid bin Qasim commented on the condition of the cemeteries in Aden, noting that they were filled with victims as a result of the ongoing crises. He said: "The cemeteries in Aden are full due to the bad situation in the country."
As for Qasim Abd Rabbo Al-Muntaser, he wondered why the opening of a new cemetery was announced while other countries were celebrating development projects that serve citizens.
This controversy reflects a general frustration in the Edenic community, as people look to projects that enhance life rather than openings that remind them of death. Under current circumstances, the need for hope and change seems greater than ever.
