A common snack fights bowel cancer

A team of scientists conducted a recent study that explores the relationship between nutrition and public health, especially in the field of cancer prevention.
This comes within the framework of seeking to understand how foods and food ingredients affect the body, and to identify foods that may contribute to reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer.
In this regard, a new study revealed that eating a handful of nuts daily may significantly reduce the risk of bowel cancer, thanks to strong vegetable compounds that enhance the health of the digestive system and reduce the infections associated with the development of cancer.
In the study, the research team from the College of Medicine at the University of Connecticut focused on a natural boat known as "elagitanin", a type of plant polyphenols found in nuts and some types of berries and pomegranate.
Once the nuts are eaten, this compound interacts with the small intestine bacteria, which converts it into a substance known as "Eurolithin A", which is an anti -inflammatory compound believed to play a major role in the prevention of cancer.
Dr. Daniel W. Rosenberg, the leader of the study, explained that "the elagoes in walnut shows unique anti -cancer and infections, especially after its transformation in the intestine to" Eurolithin A ", which is a strong factor in supporting the intestinal health."
The experiment included 39 participants between the ages of 40 and 65, all of whom were among the category of bowel cancer. They were asked to avoid foods rich in "elagitanin" before starting the experimental diet, which included eating about 28 grams of nuts per day - the equivalent of almost a handful - for 3 weeks.
At the end of the experiment, the participants underwent colonoscopy, blood tests and urine. The results showed that those who possessed high levels of "Eurolithin A" in their urine, recorded less indicators of inflammation in their bodies, in addition to a decrease in "Viminin" protein, which is associated with more fierce types of bowel cancer.Rosenberg pointed out that "eating walnuts regularly may be a simple and effective nutritional means to help prevent cancer, especially among individuals at risk."
It is reported that the nuts are associated with multiple health benefits, including support for heart health, enhancing brain functions and helping to lose weight.
The results of the study were published in Cancer Prevention Research.
