The Minister of Finance, Salem Ben Brik, discussed today, in the capital, Aden, with the head of the European Union delegation to Yemen, Gabriel Munuera Viñales, and the ambassadors of France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, the latest developments in the economic and financial situation in Yemen, and the government’s efforts with the support and assistance of brothers and friends. At the forefront of them is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in facing the current challenges.
The meeting focused on the level of implementation of the economic, financial and monetary reforms pursued by the government and the Ministry of Finance in order to sustain public finances, as well as confronting the current economic challenges in the country as a result of the Iranian-backed terrorist Houthi coup militia targeting ports and oil installations in October of last year 2022.
During the meeting, the significant negative effects of the continuation and intensification of the economic war by the Houthi militia, the continued cessation of crude oil exports, the decline of self-resources in light of the country’s expanding needs, the division of public institutions, the great disparity in monetary and financial policies, and the deterioration of purchasing value were also discussed.
The Minister of Finance spoke about the latest developments in the financial and economic conditions in Yemen, and the government’s efforts to confront the challenges facing it, fight corruption in state institutions, and achieve stability and improvement in general conditions, especially economic, service, and living conditions, as well as the importance of Saudi support in reducing the deficit in the state’s general budget. And the extent of the need for continued support from brotherly and friendly countries for the government in order to move forward with the comprehensive reform program and address the current difficult economic conditions, and the importance of continuing to support technical and human capacity building programs in the Ministry of Finance and its affiliated government departments.
Minister Ben Brik also touched on the various aspects of the comprehensive reforms that the government is implementing in accordance with the directives of the Presidential Leadership Council to improve the situation in the country, which includes implementing the decision to disburse the salaries of employees of the state’s administrative apparatus through banks approved by the Central Bank of Yemen, as well as the government’s keenness to Making optimal use of the support provided by regional and international partners to achieve development in the country. Pointing out that the comprehensive reform program is based primarily on the basis of working to develop resources, enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of public spending, end the division in state institutions, and find permanent and sustainable solutions regarding the burdens of debt and arrears.
