The head of the European mission in Yemen, Ambassador Gabriel Munuera Viñales, described the situation in Yemen as bad and unprecedented, but he seemed optimistic about the peace efforts led by the United Nations, which he said represented a glimmer of hope.
This came in his speech (Wednesday), during the celebration held in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on Europe Day, which falls on May 15 of each year, according to what the mission published on its website.
Viñales said: “There is no doubt that the current situation is bad and unprecedented, but the continuing UN-led diplomatic efforts, with our support, offer a glimmer of hope for a sustainable and comprehensive peace. He added, "Amid rising hopes for achieving peace in the country recently, the Houthis have begun attacking international shipping and disrupting vital sea routes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden."
He continued: “These reckless actions, which were widely condemned by the international community, especially the UN Security Council, have damaged maritime safety, tragically leading to the loss of innocent lives among dedicated sailors who were simply carrying out their duties.”
The head of the European mission called on the Houthi militia to release the 24 crew members of the Galaxy Leader ship, who have been detained by the Houthis since they seized the ship last November.
While Viñals stressed the European Union’s commitment to the unity, sovereignty and independence of Yemen, and its firm support for the peace efforts undertaken by the United Nations led by Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, he indicated that the Union’s priority in Yemen “is focused on promoting sustainable and comprehensive peace, stability and deeper integration of the country in the region.” Gulf".
He added, "We have worked and are still working continuously as strategic partners for Yemen with regard to humanitarian and development aid, as the humanitarian situation in Yemen remains tragic, and millions of people face food insecurity, displacement, and the spread of preventable diseases."
The head of the European mission urged “all parties, especially the Houthis, to engage constructively in the UN-led peace efforts,” and also expressed his strong condemnation of attacks on civilian infrastructure and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
Viñales reiterated the European Union's commitment to "continued multilateral cooperation, independent human rights monitoring, addressing economic challenges and life-saving humanitarian needs, and supporting maritime security," and stressed "the vital importance of ongoing UN-led initiatives to achieve stability and lasting recovery in Yemen."
