The influx of thousands of illegal Africans into the southern governorates raises concerns and poses humanitarian and security challenges

The governorates of southern Yemen have recently witnessed the influx of large numbers of illegal African immigrants, who come in search of better life opportunities, especially from Ethiopia and Eritrea. The presence of these migrants causes great pressure on the governorates in which they have settled as a result of the lack of infrastructure and economic opportunities.
According to local sources, migrants work in hard jobs such as cleaning and construction, and despite their efforts, they live in difficult humanitarian conditions due to the challenges of unemployment and the high cost of living.
Sources alerted that the presence of these immigrants has become a security threat to local communities, as cases of begging and the spread of crime and drugs have increased.
Challenges and negative points:
- Pressure on infrastructure and job opportunities in the governorates.
- High levels of begging and unemployment among immigrants.
- Overlap in sensitive and service sectors such as hospitals.
Recommendations:
- Take immediate measures to reduce the flow of illegal immigrants.
- Providing basic humanitarian care for migrants in detention.
- Resettle migrants safely in their countries.
