Yemenis in Sana'a and the rest of the areas controlled by the Houthi group received the shock of the new school year, with the cost of tuition fees quadrupling, in conjunction with royalties imposed on schools and levies, amid fears of an increase in the number of students out of education, whose number last year exceeded four million children.
And while more than 170,000 teachers work in areas controlled by the Houthi group without salaries for the ninth year, workers in the education sector and parents said that the Ministry of Education in the coup government, which is run by Yahya al-Houthi, the brother of the group's leader, raised tuition fees in public schools from four dollars. Over the past year, the student has to pay the equivalent of $16 under the name of “community contribution.”
This decision - according to the sources - will increase the number of children who are unable to enroll in education, and those who will leave school. Because their families, under these circumstances, cannot afford these fees, nor the value of buying school books, nor daily expenses.
violation of the constitution
Although the Yemeni constitution provides for free education in all its stages, the Houthi militia, despite confiscating the salaries of more than 170,000 teachers eight years ago, imposed tuition fees on each student. It started with two dollars and then raised it to the equivalent of four dollars before raising it to 16 dollars, under the pretext of supporting teachers.
