A team from the National Committee to Investigate Allegations of Human Rights Violations visited, today, Tuesday, the building of the Central Prison and the Women’s Prison and Criminal Investigation Department in Ma’rib Governorate, as part of the field trip program implemented by the Committee to the governorate.
During the visits, the members of the committee were briefed on the legal conditions of the (542) prisoners and detainees, including (15) women, pending cases being considered by the governorate’s prosecutors and courts. They also discussed a number of cases that the committee is following up, and to ascertain the extent to which the guarantees enjoyed by them were achieved. It contains prisoners in accordance with the Constitution, national laws, and human rights conventions.
The committee team listened to the legal and service demands of a number of prisoners related to the speedy resolution of their cases pending before the courts. Improving and expanding prison services in a manner commensurate with their current numbers and in a way that preserves their dignity and humanity.
The committee also heard from the director of the governorate police, the director of criminal investigation, the director of the women’s prison, and the acting director of the central prison, to a detailed explanation of the numbers of prisoners, litigation procedures, and the services provided to inmates in prisons and detention centers.
Ma'rib Governorate Police Director, Brigadier General Yahya Hamid, indicated that the local authorities in the governorate are in the process of completing the work of preparing the buildings and facilities of the new central prison to accommodate the large numbers of prisoners and detainees, who are overcrowded in the current facilities.
