As the owner of a fruit and vegetable stand in the city of Aden, I live daily in direct interaction with all segments of society. Every day I see different faces and hear sad stories from families groaning under the weight of the economic crisis that has struck the country. Over time, people's buying habits changed, and those who used to buy five thousand riyals can now barely buy more than one thousand riyals.
The economic crisis that we are suffering from today due to the deterioration of the national currency exchange rate and the interruption of salaries, in addition to the high prices that have exhausted everyone, has left a profound impact on society. Families, even those that were previously considered well-off, are unable to meet their basic daily needs.
There are families who come to me looking for spoiled vegetables to feed on, struggling in every possible way to secure a living. Sometimes, I see some of them speaking in a whisper and in a low voice, as if they were ashamed of their request, and other times they were on the verge of crying because of the helplessness and poverty that the new reality imposed on them. Some families have nothing but their tears, while others choose to express their anger in my face as if I were responsible for this situation, even though I am suffering in turn.
I live my day between depression and heartbreak. Sometimes I feel helpless in front of people's requests and needs. There are moments I want to help but I can't; The force of the crisis made everyone poor. Life has become a daily battle, not only to live, but just to survive.
What really weighs on my heart is seeing people suffer day after day, with no improvement in sight. Sometimes I am a witness to their brokenness, and sometimes I am a listener to their complaints. And between all these moments, the biggest challenge remains how can I continue to work and deal with this enormous amount of pain around me.
These harsh conditions show me every day the extent of the suffering that society is experiencing, and they put me before endless questions: How can we overcome this situation? How can I, as a simple citizen and a mattress owner, help.
