Two members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, one of them a general, were killed in a helicopter crash in the southeast of the country, according to what official media reported on Monday.
Iranian media quoted the Public Relations Department of the Ground Forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as saying that two members of the Revolutionary Guard were killed as a result of the crash of a “Gyroplane” light aircraft in the southeast of the country.
The incident occurred near the city of Sirkan in the Sistan and Baluchestan province bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan, which has often been the scene of frequent clashes between Iranian security forces and Sunni militants as well as drug smugglers.
She said that the commander of the Ninawa Brigade in Golestan Province, Brigadier General Hamid Mazandarani, and his pilot were killed in this incident, but she did not explain the reason behind this commander, whose meeting was stationed in a province in the north, to the southeast of the country at that time.
Last August, two people were killed after a gas leak in a workshop inside a facility belonging to the Revolutionary Guard in Isfahan, while 10 people were injured in the incident.
In addition to accidental incidents, Iranian media previously confirmed the killing of 10 Iranian border guards in one of the provinces during October 2023 in clashes with suspected Sunni Muslim militants.
Last April, gunmen suspected of being Sunnis killed at least 11 Iranian security personnel, while 16 of them were killed during two attacks on two Revolutionary Guard headquarters in the Sistan and Baluchestan province in the southeast of the country. At that time, it was announced that clashes took place at night between gunmen from the “Army of Justice” group and security forces in the cities of Chabahar and Rask.
The extremist Sunni group "Army of Justice" says it seeks to gain greater rights and better living conditions for the Baloch ethnic minority in Iran. It claimed responsibility for several attacks over the past few years on Iranian security forces in the Sistan and Baluchestan province.
This group, which was formed in 2012, has carried out several attacks on Iranian territory in recent years, and is classified by Tehran and Washington as a “terrorist organization.”
