A news report said on Saturday that the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia has officially concluded the third phase of reducing the size of its forces, which represents a major sign of Somalia’s progress towards self-reliance in the field of national security.
Since the start of the troop reduction process in 2023, AMISOM has succeeded in transferring control of 21 military bases to the Somali National Army and withdrawing 9,000 soldiers from the country, according to the New Somalia news website.
This reduction is part of AMISOM's exit strategy, as it prepares to complete its mandate, which expires on December 31, 2024.
The African Union Mission in Somalia gradually reduced its presence in the country, with the aim of enabling the Somali security forces to assume full responsibility for maintaining peace and stability.
It is expected that a new African Union operation in Somalia will be launched in January 2025 to succeed the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia, “ATMS”, with the aim of continuing to assist Somalia in strengthening its security capabilities.
The new African operation will focus on strategic support, training and partnership with Somali forces, reflecting the shift from direct military involvement to an advisory and supportive role.
