As the pace of fighting and violence escalated in Sudan, the administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden threw its last card, in an attempt to achieve a breakthrough in efforts to stop the war.
The US special envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, will arrive in Port Sudan tomorrow, Sunday, to meet with Sudanese government officials, after a meeting scheduled between the two parties in Cairo last August failed.
At that time, Washington attributed the cancellation of the meeting to a “violation of protocol,” while the Sudanese government said that the cancellation was due to circumstances related to the American delegation.
According to the official Sudanese News Agency, Periello’s visit will last one day, during which he will hold meetings with a number of officials in the Sovereignty Council. He will also meet with the Governor of the Darfur region, Minni Arko Minawi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Yusuf, the Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, and representatives of political forces and civil administrations.

The writer and political analyst Amir Babiker said, in an interview with Al-Ain News, that what distinguishes the American envoy’s visit is that it is the first time he will meet the government party inside Sudan.
He added, "I do not know whether he will meet Sudanese officials at Port Sudan airport or inside the city, and it has been rumored that the cancellation of the visits that were previously scheduled was due to a dispute over the meeting place."
Babakir added, “Periello’s visit comes at the end of Biden’s term, which means that it is the last card of the current American administration to put its stamp on the solution to the Sudanese crisis,” expecting that the American envoy will bring a specific, implementable proposal that will find acceptance among the government party in Port Sudan.”< /p>
He continued, "The visit coincides with the proposal launched by the African IGAD organization to deploy African forces from countries not related to the Sudanese-Sudanese conflict, and before that was the meeting that brought together Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, with the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan on On the sidelines of the Arab-Islamic summit held in Riyadh last week, in addition to efforts being made in the Egyptian capital to put pressure on the civil parties for greater agreement.
He said, "It is clear that the long-delayed visit was facing real obstacles, but at this time it indicates understandings that may have been reached to produce positive results before US President-elect Donald Trump enters the White House next January."

For his part, writer and political analyst Khaled Abdeen said that the visit of the American envoy to Sudan comes within the framework of “the Biden administration’s last-hour moves” to achieve progress in the Sudan file, after the humanitarian tragedy increased, before Trump took over responsibility, who is likely to give parties Regional roles have greater roles in the Sudan file.
Abdeen added, in an interview with Al Ain News: “The chances of success in achieving progress seem very slim.”
Sudan has witnessed fierce battles between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April of last year, after a dispute over a timetable for absorbing the Rapid Support within the ranks of the official military establishment.
The raging conflict left tens of thousands dead, millions displaced internally and externally, and caused a humanitarian tragedy amid the deteriorating health situation as the population stands on the brink of hunger.
