Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced, on Sunday, that “any authority that wants to administer Gaza must fight terrorism and accept peace.”
Netanyahu indicated, in an interview with the American network NBC, on Sunday, the possibility of reaching an agreement to release prisoners held by Hamas.
When asked about the possibility of reaching an agreement regarding women, children, and the elderly detained by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Netanyahu replied: “It is possible, but the less I say about this issue, the greater the chances of it being achieved.”
Netanyahu considered that things were progressing thanks to Israeli military pressure, saying: “We were not close at all (to reaching an agreement) until we started ground operations... The moment we started ground operations, things began to change.”
He added: “Pressure on Hamas leaders is what could lead to an agreement, and if an agreement is available, we will talk about it when it exists, and we will announce it if it is reached,” according to Agence France-Presse.
The Israeli military estimates that about 240 people were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip during the first day of the Hamas attack. Among those detained are at least 30 minors, including children, according to Israeli media.
The Palestinian presidency said, on Sunday, that Gaza is an integral part of the Palestinian territories, and Israel’s attempts to separate it will fail, while the war between Israel and the armed Palestinian factions in Gaza enters its 37th day, amid a very large humanitarian crisis in the Strip.
Palestinian presidential spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeina, said that the Palestinian presidency called on Washington to take immediate action against the war of genocide waged by Israel. He added, "Any international efforts that do not lead to ending the occupation will be useless."
In turn, the Secretary of the Fatah movement said in an intervention with Al Arabiya that Netanyahu is working to destroy the agreements signed with the Palestinian Authority, and is working to prolong the war in the Gaza Strip. Hussein Al-Sheikh added: “Only a political solution will end the current war in Gaza. The international community is silent regarding what is happening to the Palestinians, and security and military solutions to end the war in the Gaza Strip will not work.”
The Secretary of the Fatah Movement added that the Palestine Liberation Organization represents all Palestinians, and the Palestinian Authority will not accept any partial solution to the situation in the Gaza Strip. He added: "We do not blame the leaders of Hamas, and we are in constant contact with them," stressing that "the Palestine Liberation Organization is open to any dialogue with Hamas."
