Eyewitnesses told the Arab World News Agency that angry marches took place in several locations in the West Bank after the announcement of the assassination of Saleh Al-Arouri, deputy head of the Hamas political bureau, in an explosion that targeted the movement’s office in Beirut this Tuesday evening. .
Witnesses reported that marches were launched in the city of Ramallah, and demonstrators went out in more than one location towards the city center.
They added that the mosques in the town of Aroura, Al-Arouri’s hometown, mourned him over loudspeakers.
Al-Aroub camp in Hebron also witnessed marches denouncing the assassination, and activists announced on social media platforms that marches would begin in the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank.
In Israel, although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued instructions to his ministers not to make statements after the killing of Al-Arouri, there were celebratory signs among a number of officials who welcomed his assassination and vowed to target others.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said in a tweet on the “X” platform: “Yes, all of Israel’s enemies will perish.”
Knesset member from the Likud Party, Danny Danon, said on the “X” platform: “I congratulate the Israeli army and security forces on the assassination, for which Israel has not claimed responsibility at this stage.”
The celebrations also reached the Israeli media itself, as the Broadcasting Authority described Al-Arouri’s assassination as a “dramatic assassination.”
The commission described Al-Arouri as one of Hamas's strategic experts, and responsible for the activities of the military wing in the West Bank. She said that his assassination was “the most important liquidation” since the beginning of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip on October 7.
