At a time when the United States of America is working to avoid a large-scale military operation in Rafah, Israel said that Hamas is rebuilding its capabilities in the north.
An Israeli army spokesman said on Saturday that Israeli forces operating in Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip are preventing Hamas from rebuilding its military capabilities there.
The spokesman, Admiral Daniel Hagari, added during a press conference, “In the past weeks, we have monitored attempts by Hamas to rebuild its military capabilities in Jabalia, and we are working there to eliminate those attempts.”
Haghari said that Israeli forces operating in the Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City killed about 30 Palestinian militants.
While the Israeli official's statements open the door to extending the war, Washington offered Israel to provide sensitive intelligence information to help it locate Hamas leaders and find tunnels, in exchange for retreating from a large-scale invasion of Rafah.
According to the Washington Post, American officials also offered to help provide thousands of shelters so that Israel can build tent cities and help build systems to deliver food, water and medicine to about one and a half million Palestinians in Rafah.
The newspaper added that this aid aims to enable the Palestinians who were evacuated from Rafah to obtain a suitable place to live, according to what American officials said.
Israel asked residents in eastern Rafah to evacuate as part of a military operation that the international community fears will have catastrophic consequences.
Badin's aides stress to their Israeli counterparts that Palestinians cannot simply be moved to barren or bombed parts of Gaza, but that Israel must provide basic infrastructure so those evacuated can receive assistance.
The American offers came during negotiations that took place over the past weeks between senior American and Israeli officials regarding the size and scope of the operation in Rafah.
