Five Arab countries announced their support for tripartite mediation efforts to stop the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since October 7.
This came in a joint statement by the foreign ministers of Jordan, the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt, following a “virtual” meeting between them.
The statement stated that the ministers discussed developments in the mediation efforts undertaken by Egypt, Qatar and the United States “to reach an exchange deal that leads to a permanent ceasefire, the release of (Israeli) hostages and detainees, and the sufficient entry of aid into the Gaza Strip.”
The five ministers affirmed their “support for these efforts,” and “discussed the proposal presented by US President Joe Biden to achieve this on June 2,” according to the statement.
The ministers stressed “the importance of dealing seriously and positively with the US President’s proposal with the aim of agreeing on a deal that guarantees a permanent ceasefire and the adequate delivery of aid to all parts of the Gaza Strip, in a way that ends the suffering of the people of the Strip.”
They stressed “the necessity of stopping the aggression against Gaza and ending the humanitarian catastrophe it is causing, the return of the displaced to their areas, and the complete withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces from the Gaza Strip.”
They also stressed the necessity of “launching the reconstruction process (of the sector) within the framework of a comprehensive plan to implement the two-state solution in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions and with specific timings and binding guarantees.”
In addition, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that the proposal presented by US President Joe Biden regarding ending the war is “dangerous.”
Smotrich added that he told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that they would oppose him “if he chooses defeat,” indicating that he might agree to a ceasefire.
In turn, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured members of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee that what he described as the claim that Tel Aviv agreed to a ceasefire without fulfilling its conditions is not true.
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said that US President Joe Biden's plan means ending the war on Gaza without eliminating Hamas, and without achieving the goals of the war.
Ben Gvir added - in a press conference - that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed him a day ago that he could see the draft of the deal, but he did not present it to him yet. Rather, Netanyahu’s aides told him that there was no draft, according to him.
Ben Gvir threatened to dismantle the government if Netanyahu agreed to the deal without eliminating Hamas. He added that the delay in showing him the draft means that there is a bad agreement that will lead to ending the war without “annihilating Hamas,” and he demanded that it be presented immediately, stressing that he will not make a decision before So.
