The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said that the attack occurred at the Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque. A local source said that it is known as the Imam Ali Mosque, and Shiites pray there in the Sultanate of Oman, which has a Sunni majority.
The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attack that occurred in the Wadi Al Kabir area of the capital, Muscat, as a “terrorist” attack, and said that 30 wounded were receiving treatment in the hospital.
The attack came at a time when Shiites commemorate the day of Ashura.
The Shiite celebration of Ashura has sometimes sparked sectarian tension between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in some countries, but this is not usual in Oman.
