A number were killed and wounded when a shell fell on a football field in Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights.
While the Israeli army said that the missile was fired from Lebanon, Hezbollah denied any connection to the attack.
The Israeli army did not explain the reasons for not intercepting the shell that fell on a Saturday evening, a holiday, on a stadium, and the majority of its victims were young men.
Israeli Channel 12 news said that 9 people between the ages of 10 and 20 were killed when a missile fell on the football field during a match.
It also indicated that 30 people were injured.
Videos posted on social media showed pictures of the dead and wounded.
Rescue teams took the wounded from the place.
The Israeli army announced that the fall of the shell coincided with the firing of dozens of rockets from Lebanon at northern Israel.
The Israeli army said in a statement received by Al-Ain News: “Regarding the warnings that were activated in the north, the talk is that about 30 rocket shells were fired from Lebanon, and the air defenses intercepted a number of them, while the rest fell in an open area.”
He added: “It was also observed that about 10 shells were fired from Lebanon, which fell in an open area without causing any casualties.”
He continued: “A short time later, an alarm was activated in the Majdal al-Shams area after detecting the launch of a rocket shell from Lebanon. The missile fell, resulting in reports of injuries.”
He added: “Helicopters and Al-Zalal Army forces rushed to the place to evacuate the injured.”
The army stressed that “a rocket was fired into the Majdal Shams area, not a march.”
An Israeli political source said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is in the United States of America, was briefed on the details of the incident in Majdal Shams, and is conducting security consultations.
In turn, the Israeli army said: “Chief of Staff, General Herzi Halevy, is holding a session to assess the situation with the Commander of the Northern Command, the Chief of Operations, the Commander of the Air Force, and other commanders, following the firing of missiles towards the Majdal Shams region and the north of the country.”
An Israeli official said that what happened in Majdal Shams will not pass easily and the response to Hezbollah will be harsh.
Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz repeated the same statements, saying that Hezbollah had crossed red lines and the response would be appropriate.
He indicated that Israel is close to entering into a comprehensive war with Hezbollah.
Sirens sounded in many Israeli towns near the Lebanese border.
