The exchange rates of the Yemeni riyal against foreign currencies continued to deteriorate records, in light of the deteriorating basic services, angry protests witnessed in the capital, Aden, and other governorates.
The exchange rates of the dollar against the Yemeni riyal approached in trading today, Monday, from the level of 2300, while the Saudi riyal exchange rate approached the 600 barrier.
The Yemeni riyal has lost about 20% of its value in just two months since Saudi Arabia announced the provision of financial support worth half a billion dollars, without reflecting positive effects on the riyal and basic commodity prices.
On February 4, the United Nations World Food Program announced that the value of the Yemeni riyal in government control areas decreased by 26 percent during the year 2024.
The program said in a recent report that "the Yemeni riyal fell by 26 percent during the year 2024 in the regions of the internationally recognized government."
The report added that the Yemeni riyal "lost 71 percent of its value against the US dollar during the past five years."
The report stated that "this decrease primarily led to the payment of fuel prices to unprecedented levels and caused the cost of the food basket by 21 percent between January and December 2024"
